I have been dealing with complex IRA and retirement planning issues since 1997. The one constant that I continually see is that few people, professional advisors especially, really have a clue about the actual legalities of IRAs. Since most people don’t know about the rules they should be following, they typically end up breaking the rules and causing disastrous tax consequences.
Due to my specialized knowledge in IRAs I’ve been asked by CPA and financial planning groups to provide them with educational courses on the subject. In fact one of my presentations was selected by the Financial Planners Association to be one of the best at their Summit Event.
The typical ways I help clients are:
- Correct reporting errors on 1099s and 1040s for IRAs
- Design an estate plan for their IRA
- Analyze their account for violations of the tax code and try to repair the violations.
While I’m licensed as an attorney in Washington state, I work with clients all around the country by phone, fax, and email.
Billing is typically by the project and not hourly. Typical fees are a few hundred dollars to analyze your situation. If you’re looking for a trust to hold retirement assets that will probably run $3,000 to $5,000 depending upon the circumstances. (By the way, if you think attorneys just fill in blanks on forms, here are some blank forms and you can do things for free.)
